📈 A Case Study: Smart Tooth

Let’s continue to talk strategy. One of the most overlooked assets in a business—especially in tech or healthcare—is intellectual property.

But when done right, IP isn't just about protection. It’s about monetization. And sometimes, it shows up in the most surprising places.

Here we take the case of the Smart Tooth—a lesser-known but brilliant innovation in medical tech.

This tiny device was developed for diabetics and uses a spectroscope and vibration sensors embedded in a tooth-like wearable. Its mission? To analyze food intake in real-time and assist with insulin management. That alone is revolutionary. But the true genius lies not just in the invention—but in how the inventors monetized it.

Smart Tooth. They didn’t stop at patents!

They wrapped the innovation in a freemium app model: basic features for free, premium tracking and insights for a monthly subscription. That creates a recurring revenue stream—all built on the foundation of protected IP.

By patenting the core technology and turning user data into a service, they transformed a single innovation into a sustainable business. This is IP monetization at its finest—and a case study in how even a niche medical solution can become a global income engine.

The lesson: Don’t just file patents! Build a monetization strategy around them. Whether it’s licensing, recurring models, or product extensions—protected IP can become the core of long-term wealth creation.

  • If you want to raise capital, you need to demonstrate ownership of your intellectual property, not just your ideas.

  • If you're planning an exit, show how your IP increases enterprise value.

  • IP is not just about protection. It's about monetization and positioning.
